With today’s fashion market being as it is it can be easy to forget the culture around the clothes you wear. Whilst you would be right to assume the many garments are factory produced and offer some wonderful designs it’s not unusual to purchase clothes that have been prepared in a more traditional way.
beach sarongs are amongst the many garments that are made from material using the Batik Method. The beach sarong is a simple enough garment that offers its owner a number of ways in which it can be worn, but what you may not be aware of is it’s culture and history. The sarong has a glamorous history that spans over many countries and it’s this that gives the beach sarong its many unique designs and varied colours.
What Is Batik?
Batik is a material which is created using an ancient art form which is still used today to create many beach sarongs to this day. The process involves marking certain areas of the fabric in wax and once the wax has dried on the fabric it is then dyed. The wax which is held on the garment stops the dye penetrating these certain areas. Once the dye has dried then the wax is simply removed with hot water, which in turn produces a unique pattern
What Is the History of Batik?
The art of Batik spans across many cultures and countries. The ancient art form has its roots in 4th century Egypt where linen was soaked in wax. Asia also has a history when the art form was performed during the T’ang Dynasty. The western world was introduced to the beautifully made garments via a number of methods. The first being the introduction via Dutch traders, add to this the influence of Hollywood and the peoples need to individualise themselves in the 1960s all added to the fame of the sarong.
The Batik method is also used to make other things as well as sarongs. The process is also used to produce a number of wall canvases and furnishing fabrics as well as tablecloths and household fabrics. The influence of Batik has also carried over to artists who have created many Batik paintings that are held pride and place in many people’s homes.
The meeting of a straightforward idea and an ancient art form has gone on to create one of the most versatile fashion accessories in the world and still remains as popular today as it did so many years ago.
